I wonder if any ...Great story and link to Stegner. I wonder if any of our politicians ever read Wolf Willow? Stegner's comment about the need to have such spaces even if we don't enter them reverberated in a 1977 John Denver song "To the Wild Country". Denver was often mocked for talking of the wild country while he spent so much time in Los Angeles, Vegas and the like. His response was that is where he earned his money so he could retreat to the wild country when he needed to. His song fits this concept of the need to have the land for inspiration even if we never get to it.

There are times I fear I lose myself
I don't know who I am
I get caught up in the struggle and the strain
With my back against a stonewall
My finger in the dam
Losing strength and going down again

And I take a look around me
My eyes can't find the sun
There's nothing wild as far as I can see
Then my heart turns to Alaska
And freedom on the run
I can hear her spirit calling me

To the mountains, I can rest there
To the rivers, I will be strong
To the forest, I'll find peace there
To the wild country, where I belongAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10271456927925116126noreply@blogger.com
